About Mitawali – Chausath Yogini Temple

The Ekattarso Mahadeva Temple, also called the Chausath Yogini Temple at Mitawali, was constructed in the 11th century in the district of Morena, Madhya Pradesh, India, during the Kachchhapaghata rule.According to an inscription its dated 1323CE or Vikram Samvat 1383. It is considered one of the best-preserved Yogini temples in India, consisting of a circular wall with 65 rooms for the goddess Devi and 64 yoginis, as well as an open mandapa

The Yogini temples in India were built between the 9th and 12th centuries as open-air shrines to honor female yoga masters known as yoginis, who were considered to be goddesses, particularly Parvati, representing feminine power. These temples were not well-known or studied by scholars until the late 20th century. Some of these shrines were designed with niches for 64 yoginis and are referred to as Chausath Yogini Temples, while others have 42 or 81 niches for different sets of goddesses, although they are still often referred to as Chausath yogini temples.

The outer wall of the Yogini temple is uniquely decorated with statues of couples and maidens, although many of them are damaged or lost. Consider the image below to understand why it is called Chausath Yogini Temple

Initially, the chambers inside the perimeter wall of the temple housed 64 images of Yoginis and possibly one image of the goddess Devi. Currently, each chamber contains an image of Shiva, and the temple is called the Chausath Yogini Temple (Chausath meaning “Sixty-four” in Hindi). The temple was originally constructed with towers or shikharas over the 64 chambers and the central shrine, similar to those found at the Chausath Yogini Temple in Khajuraho. However, these were removed during later renovations. The roofing slabs of the central shrine have small holes to allow rainwater to drain into an underground tank.

The Mitawali temple, located in Seismic Zone III, has endured multiple earthquakes with little to no significant harm. This was brought up during discussions in the Indian Parliament regarding the safety of the circular-shaped Parliament House, which was inspired by the temple’s design.
