Garhi Padavali

Padavali, a fortress in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh is 25kms away from Gwalior in India, is home to one of the most amazing temples in the country. This 8th/9th century temple, in all probability dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a feast for the eyes of visitors who come to marvel at the intricate carvings and fine craftsmanship.

Although only the front portion or the mukhmandap of the temple survives which was bui, it is still a magnificent sight to behold. The temple was built during a time when the art of temple construction and sculpture was at its peak in India, and the fine workmanship seen in the carvings is a testament to this

The fortress that surrounds the temple was built much later, in the 19th century, probably to safeguard the temple from invaders. As one takes a stroll around the fortress, one can see figures of lions at the entrance and climb up the stairs to encounter the temple front portion.

The intricate carvings on the beams and ceiling of the temple leave visitors spellbound with awe and amazement. Scenes from great Indian epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas are depicted in the carvings, and tales related to Samudra manthan, Krishna leela, wedding of Ganesha, and the death dance of Shiva are so beautifully sculpted that they give a three-dimensional effect.

Another interesting aspect of the temple is the presence of erotic sculptures in various poses that predate the more famous Khajuraho sculptures by a couple of centuries. These sculptures are a reflection of the openness and freedom that existed in ancient Indian society.
