Sun Temple

The Sun Temple of Gwalior is a remarkable structure commissioned by the renowned Indian industrialist, G.D Birla, in 1984. The construction of the temple began on 19th January 1984, and it took almost four years to complete. Finally, on 23rd January 1988, the temple was completed, and it became known as Surya Van or Surya Garden. The temple’s original name was Tapovan Garden, but it was renamed after its completion. The Sun Temple of Gwalior draws inspiration from the famous Sun Temple of Konark in Orissa and is equally revered in the ancient city. The temple’s stunning architecture and design are a testament to the rich cultural heritage of India.

As you encounter the outer edifice, you will see the red sandstone exterior of the Sun Temple built in the manner of gradual slots that reach up to the peak of the facade. A splendid idol of the Sun Lord is enshrined in the temple. Although not constructed long ago, it is among the most revered shrines in the ancient city attracting tourists and devotees from all over the country in large numbers
