About Tomb of Mohammad Ghaus

Gwalior, a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, is home to a magnificent mausoleum that is a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of the Mughal era. Located on the way to Gwalior fort near Hazira from the railway station, this mausoleum was constructed in memory of Afghan prince who turned sufi , Ghaus Mohammed.

Built in sandstone, the mausoleum is a fine example of early Mughal architecture and is particularly renowned for its delicate screens that use the pierced stone technique. The structure is a sight to behold, with its intricate details and stunning architecture. The sandstone used in its construction gives it a warm, golden hue that glows in the sunlight.

The mausoleum is built on a raised platform and is surrounded by a beautiful garden, complete with fountains and water channels. The garden is designed in the traditional Charbagh style, with four quadrants divided by walkways. This creates a serene and peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for visitors to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The Afghan prince, Ghaus Mohammed, was born in Gwalior in 1500. He was a Sufi saint who translated the Amrtakunda from Sanskrit to Persian as the Bahr al-Hayat (The Ocean of Life), introducing to Sufism a set of yoga practices. His followers believed that he ascended to heaven and from there was able to direct help down to them; and further, that he was the “axial saint, the pivot of the universe”.
