About Tomb Of Tansen

Tansen, the famous musician from Gwalior, is known for his exceptional skills in Indian classical music. He was the lead singer of Emperor Akbar’s court and is regarded as one of the nine gems of Akbar’s court. Tansen’s tomb is situated in Gwalior, along with his mentor Muhammad Ghaus’s tomb.

It is believed that Tansen’s music was so powerful that when he sang the Megh Raag, it would start raining. He was also known to have enchanted animals with his music. Tansen was a follower of the Sufi culture and was buried with his mentor, Sufi Saint Muhammad Ghaus.

One of the most interesting legends about Tansen is that his enemies once forced him to sing the Deepak Raag. Tansen refused to do so, as singing this particular Raag would create heat, enlighten the lights and finally burn him to ashes. His enemies wanted to see him dead, which is why they forced him to sing Deepak Raag.

Tansen’s tomb is a beautiful example of the Mughal style of architecture. Visitors to the tomb can admire the intricate carvings and designs that are typical of this style. Every year in November-December, the Tansen Sangeet Festival is celebrated in Gwalior to commemorate the birthday of this great musician. Music lovers from all over the world attend this festival to enjoy the performances of renowned artists.

If you are planning to visit Gwalior, make sure to include a visit to Tansen’s tomb in your itinerary. It is a great opportunity to learn about the history of Indian classical music and pay tribute to one of its greatest musicians. Bring your family and friends along to enjoy the beauty and serenity of this place.
