Archaeology in Gwalior

Gwalior, ruled by the Scindia royals, was one of the most prominent principalities that existed within the British Raj. Its territory occupied a significant tract of central India, and it is from these areas that their archaeological department attempted to conjure up a scientific mode of historical creationism based on hard evidence in art, architecture, and artefacts. Garde ties the history of archaeology in Gwalior to Cunningham, the first art historian and archaeologist in India, and explains the work done by his department.
